Israeli composer and musician Avi Rosenfeld and German vocalist Marco Buono have a working relationship that dates back to 2017 or thereabouts, and have worked together on 7 albums as a collaborative duo so far. "Listen Honey" is the most recent of these, and was self released in 2021 through the Bandcamp site of Rosenfeld.
Rosenfeld is the main creator behind this album, and for a good number of years now he has steadily released a small handful of albums each and every year where he explored classic rock and classic hard rock in various forms and constellations. He has a certain fondness for Deep Purple and Uriah Heep it would seem, as he has a long ongoing series of albums named "Very Heepy Very Purple", but there's quite a lot of other types of material he explores on the close to 60 albums he has released at this point too.
"Listen Honey" is a bit of an eclectic affair, in that there's a fairly great variety at hand here in terms of style, genre and orientation. We do get the Deep Purple and Uriah Heep referencing material Rosenfeld is most well known for, including one that to my ears sounds like a bit of a homage to the Mark I line-up of that band too, but we also get a good handful of songs that explore a more light toned and elegant manner of retro-oriented rock where rock rather than hard rock is the focus and the acoustic guitar has a more dominant role in part or in full and on some of these tunes the organ is tossed aside too. We also get a sharp left turn here when the band decides to explore a bit of a western rock take on the good, old reggae.
As is often the case with me on these albums, I find the execution to be good, with Buono having a strong voice and Rosenfeld being an able guitarist. All the people involved know how to pull off an authentic retro-oriented sound too. While the end result doesn't really manage to rise beyond the expected levels here this is a good and well made album, and one that will be a pleasant listen for those who love and treasure this style and this type of retro-oriented rock and hard rock.
