Israeli artist Avi Rosenfeld is a creative and productive artist, and while he has one long lasting project where greater parts of his creative forces unfold he also has the capacity for other projects of a more or less fixed nature. One of these is a collaboration with singer Marco Bueno, where the two of them have released a good handful of albums over the span of a few years. The album "Sad Wings" dates back to 2018, and was self released by Rosenfeld.

While Rosenfeld is best known for his excursions into the realms of hard rock and classic era heavy metal, of which we get one example also on this album, the material explored on this production will by and large sidestep those realms of music and focus on other landscapes and different kind of moods. Some are intriguing but difficult to describe, like the dampened theatrical blues rock of 'Sooner or Later' or the roots music meets gypsy jazz and blues on 'Sentimental Blues'. Others are easier to describe, like the Led Zeppelin style ballad ' My Own Precious Girl', complete with steel guitar details and a few touches of flamenco that expands the landscape of that creation considerably.

But whether exploring these creative territories, heading straight into roots and Americana landscapes or taking on jazzrock and psychedelic rock, the compositions on this album comes across as really well developed, the lead vocal presence is a strong and compelling one, and the styles and orientations explored are by and large interesting and intriguing, and quite a bit of a left turn from the type of material I am used to hearing Rosenfeld exploring. With even a bit of honky tonk meeting up with rockabilly in a country rock setting present on this production.

As this album is a varied one in terms of the styles and orientations that are explored, this will be an album that requires a listener with a fairly wide taste in music. A certain fascination for different types of roots music will probably be needed, and having the ear to appreciate a good quality vocal performance too. Those who recognize themselves in that description should find this album to be a rewarding one, and in my book this is one of the more impressive albums I've encountered by Rosenfeld so far too.
