US band The D.O.O.D. have been around for a couple of decades at this point, and from 2017 and onward they have been releasing new material at a steady pace with one EP, three full length albums and a number of singles to their name. The band is now out with the single "Subterfuge", which was released through the label SelfMadeRecords.

What we get here is a fairly expressive variety of what I'd describe as 80s era thrash metal. We get some instrumental parts that flirt a bit with more classic heavy metal, but once the verse and the vocals kicks in we are placed inside of a foundation and a context that gives me associations to classic era Nuclear Assault in many ways, albeit perhaps not quite as hectic as this legendary band had a tendency to be back in the day. We then switch over to an arguably more technical mode at the end of the verse, possibly a bit closer to classic era Megadeth in style and execution, before the more crossover thrash elements takes charge again for the chorus section. The song then moves on in this ebb and flow manner until the end arrives after 4 minutes and a bit.

The mix and production comes with a little bit of an old school feel too on this occasion, with a little bit of a murky and a little bit of a closed in sound. In this case this isn't done in a detrimental manner, but rather strikes me as a well planned move to emphasize the sound of metal in general and thrash metal in particular and the sound found on albums by bands exploring these types of music in the latter half of the 1980s.

A solid single that merits a listen by those fond of 80s metal in general and 80s thrash metal in particular, and those fond of a little bit of crossover thrash should, at least in my opinion, find this song to be quite the charming little affair.
