Italian threesome We Fog were formed back in 2015, and are described as being inspired by the noise, post, and math rock scene of the 1990s. They self released their debut album "Float" back in 2017. Following a few years of gestation the threesome are now back with their second studio production. This time around they have opted for a mini-album, which was self released in the fall of 2024.
While I see this creation being marketed as a noise rock goes post-rock kind of production, for my sake I'd draw in some other terms to define the landscapes explored on this mini-album. The noise rock description is retained though, as that aspect of the material is the key recurring element throughout.
In some ways my impression is that the band kind of explore what manner of combinations they can make use of in a setting where noise rock elements are recurring and defining elements of the album as a whole. We get a little bit of indie rock here, dreamladen psychedelic rock there, and quite a few instances where the band play around with some specific details pulled in from the punk and post-punk legacy respectively. In addition I do get the impression that these are folks that know their way around a few garage rock albums too. We do get a little bit of a post-rock feel at times too, just to mention that, but those melody and harmony tendencies are rather far away from defining these landscapes. At least as I experience this production.
Instead we get songs, mainly of the shorter variety, that play around with one or more supplements to the recurring and defining noise rock elements. With the songs given a little bit of a jangly and lo-fi feel due to the mix and production, and whether these latter aspects are planned or not they do suit the kind of landscapes explored on this occasion.
I do find this to be quite the enthralling and hypnotic experience at best, with only the somewhat chaotic concluding cut 'Timex' leaving me feeling a little bit cold. Otherwise I find this to be quite the charming mini-album. Perhaps not the album that will have the broadest and widest appeal out there, but most certainly music that manages to find its way into my mind as intriguing and interesting experiences.
If a mini-album described as a jangly blend of noise rock, post-punk, garage rock and indie rock that has been explored and executed in a little bit of a lo-fi and honest sounding manner strikes you as an intriguing proposition, chances are good that you will find this production to be an interesting experience.
