German band Piledriver has been a feature in the European rock and hard rock scene since the middle of the 1990s, initially being a straight up Status Quo cover band but then segueing over to explore their own blend of classic rock and classic era hard rock style and expression. "First Nations Rock" is their most recent studio production, and was released towards the tail end of 2025 through their own label Rockwall Records.
That this is a band that know and probably cherish their Status Quo does shine through in a few of the songs on this most recent album of theirs too, with clear and distinct boogie rhythms and drive being a cornerstone on a few of the songs here. Sometimes sounding a bit like a beefed up version of that classic band, and on at least one other occasion coming across as a little bit of a bastard child between that band and early days AC/DC.
But the key elements of this production are all the songs that to a lesser or greater degree dives straight into the classic era hard rock expression, more often than not with a classic guitar dominated sound flavored with careful organ or keyboard details. With quite a few firm, captivating and energetic cuts that come with both a punch and an edge, with the slightly gritty vocals adding quite a bit of personality to the landscapes explored.
The band does expand ever so subtly to this classic era hard rock sound though. A little bit of an Americana or southern rock inspired undercurrent may be present at times, other songs may arguably include a little bit of a classic era heavy metal flavoring too, and with at least a couple of the songs striking me as having ever so slight tendencies in the direction of a band like Saxon and how they sounded in their earlier days. Stressing the ever so slight description as far as this detail is concerned though. We also get some fiery guitar details and some tasteful slide guitar on a cut like 'The World's On Fire', while the concluding 'Shout It Out' by plan or chance also adds a slight Led Zeppelin flirt to the soundscape. This latter song also being one of the standout songs on this production as far as I'm concerned.
From my point of view the softer and more careful escapades isn't a particular strength of this band, but with one clear exception here in the case of the firm, subtle and brilliantly subdued 'Comin' Home', where a gentler touch and a strong drive combines very well indeed in a distinctly Americana flavored expression.
Piledriver know their way around the classic era hard rock sound as well as the boogie tradition of the hard rock genre, and mix this up in a neat and captivating manner with a little bit of subtle flair and power that arguably has a bit more of a classic era heavy metal touch to it adding additional flavor to the landscapes the create and explore. A fine album with many solid songs that should please those who enjoy their boogie style rock and hard rock just as much as classic era hard rock.
