Danish composer and musician Søren Bebe is approaching twenty years as a recording and performing artist with Søren Bebe Trio, with nine studio albums to his name and a tenth album set to be released in January 2027. "Gratitude" is the ninth album by him and his trio, and was released in the fall of 2025 on Bandcamp and in early 2026 through Bebe's own label From Out Here Music.

It is a delicate affair, this production, where the pace is slow and very deliberately so, and the focus appears to be on creating distinct moods and atmospheres with emotional associations more than anything else. The piano is the clear lead instrument all the way through, delivering both careful and vulnerable motifs as well as more flowing and wandering ones with a more firm character. The rhythm section gets to be quite expressive throughout, with drums and percussion in particular being rather busy in these slow paced compositions. The bass can be a bit more unobtrusive and with more of a supporting role at times, but also gets some solo spots along the way as well as being the provider of more expressive instrument sounds on occasion. With gliding and sliding sounds being an example of this.

Quite a few of these creations come across as more introspective in nature, where the joyful patterns and sounds are understated, and frequently with a more melancholic touch being the order of the day alongside the more subtle joyful peaks. Many of the compositions also give me associations to a feeling of longing for something, but in more of a warm and melancholic manner. With 'Silent Listener' being the only of the songs here that gave me a bit of a darker, more mournful association as far as mood and atmosphere is concerned.

If you enjoy a more contemplative and arguably introverted variety of careful, piano-dominated instrumental jazz, then this album by Søren Bebe Trio is one that probably warrants a check. In particular if a more understated manner of expressive instrument performances in such a setting is a matter that you tend to find tasteful and intriguing.
