Matt Finucane: Ruination (2026) [mini-review]
UK artist Matt Finucane is out with the album "Ruination" through the label Eyeless Records, and it is inside of the broad rock music umbrella that this production will be sorted. This is a quirky and peculiar album though, and a decidedly distinct creation in terms of sound, mood and expression. Post punk is probably the best tag to make use of here, as the music clearly has a punk foundation or inspiration and quite clearly is post this expression in terms of style. We do have similarities to 80s post punk being a presence here, but also material that arguably may be just as closely related to the quirky excursions of a band like The Cramps. That we have a little bit of a noise rock seasoning isn't all that surprising guess, nor that a little bit of a psychedelic rock impulse is a presence here. The vocals are also rather distinct here, but for me at least reminding me more of artists such as Lou Reed and David Bowie. An album to seek out by those who tend to enjoy the quirkier and more distinctly sounding artists that mainly operate inside of a post punk framework.
